Child Abuse: Woman docked for locking maid in the toilet for 20 days

A 34-year-old woman has been arraigned in a Lagos State court for allegedly locking up her maid inside a toilet for 20 days.

A 34-year-old woman, Oyinye Chuks, has been arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Lagos State for allegedly locking up her 14-year old housemaid in a toilet for 20 days for an ofeence the girl committed.

News Agency of Nigeria reports that Chuks, a trader who lives at 19, Ojo Street, Shasha area of the state, was docked on a four-count bordering on assault.

According to the police prosecutor, Sergeant Raphael Donny, Chucks allegedly locked up the teenager between May 2 to May 22, 2017, at her residence after she accused the girl of stealing her money.

Sgt. Donny added that the accused would beat the girl mercilessly every day she was in bondage because she refused to confess to the theft.

“The accused locked the girl inside her toilet, fed her once and didn’t allow her to take a bath or change her clothes for those weeks in bondage.

It was one of the neighbours who could not bear the torment anymore that informed the police," the prosecutor said.

Sgt. Donny added that following the report, the police visited the house and found the girl in the condition and arrested Chuks.

“After finding the girl in that condition, she was rescued and taken to the hospital for treatment while the accused was arrested," the prosecutor, adding that the offences contravened Sections 171, 207, 245 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

When the charges were read to her, Chuks pleaded not guilty and the Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Abegunde Davies granted her bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.

The magistrate ordered the accused to pay N200,000 into the Court Registrar's account as part of the bail conditions while the case was adjourned until June 21, 2017, for a mention.
