Pastor Ashimolowo: The #MumuChallenge of giving $1,000 or N1,000 for every year on earth

The mainstream Nigerian church is only made for the rich these days.

A video of popular Nigerian man of God, Pastor Ashimolowo has gone viral.

In the clip, the  Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC) founder told his congregation to sow a seed of $1,000. For members of his church who can't afford this, he instructs them to pay N1,000 for every year they have lived on earth.

"For every year you have lived on earth, I want you to give a N100… No sorry, a N1,000 Naira. If you have lived on earth for 35 years, you give N35,000. You have lived 60 years, you give N60,000.

“Those who are paying one thousand dollars to the left while those paying in Naira to the right. Thousand dollars to the left, thousand Naira to the right, those that are doing the both, to the middle.“Get out of your seats" said the Pastor.

The date of this sermon isn't known but this hasn't stopped it from trending. Popular social critic and on-air-personality Daddy Freeze has already commented about the video.

"Nigerians, their IQ of 67 and their men of God. Come and give a thousand dollars for every year you have lived??

Can you show me anywhere in the Bible where Jesus used this 'fund raising' approach? I remember 5 loaves and 2 fishes but 1000 dollars???????"  he wrote on his Instagram yesterday, Wednesday, June 14, 2017.

Flashy Nigerian pastors have taken this 'seed faith' principle to another level. To be honest, it seems it is just a way to take money out from people's pockets. There's a reason the story of the widow's mite is in the Bible. The old woman gave all she had and in the sight of the Lord, it was more than what rich men gave. She gave what she could afford and not what a Pharisee compelled her to give.

For those who can't afford $1,000 or N1,000 for each year they have lived what will happen to them? Will they be cut off from God's blessings? Does God really operate like this?

In Nigeria, the only crime is for you to poor. In many so called Pentecostal churches, the only sin is to be poor. You are automatically cut off God's blessings if you do not have the requisite amount to unlock the goodness of the Lord.

Mainstream Christianity in Nigeria feels like one big #mumuchallege. The desperate and gullible give their hard earned money to men of God in designer suits. There is nothing wrong in giving money to your church but open your eyes when you do. Giving to God does not come with terms and conditions. God sees our hearts. Give what you have and God will do the rest.

Many people have been spiritually blackmailed into giving what they do not have. What's sad about this is that they are not giving to God but a pastor hellbent on living like a billionaire at all costs.
