A Vice Principal who raped a 12-year-old pupil has been found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Ekiti State.

A retired Vice Principal, Taiwo Ajayi, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by an Ekiti State High Court after he was found guilty of raping a 12-year-old student inside his office.

Total Media reports that Ajayi committed the offence when he was the VP [Academics] of  St. Mary’s Girl Grammar School, Ikole-Ekiti, on March 18, 2014, after luring the girl into his office during school hours.

It was gathered that after telling the girl to come to his office and run an errand for him, Ajayi then locked the door, gagged the victim's mouth to prevent her from crying out and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her on his office table.

While he was defiling the girl, a teacher who saw her go into the office went and knocked on the door but Ajayi refused to open the door and the teacher called on another staff and together, they forced the door open and found the convict on top of the girl.

While passing the sentence on Ajayi, the President of the Court, Justice Oluwatoyin Abodunde, held that based on the strength of the evidence presented to the court, the prosecution has proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The prosecution counsel led by A.E Arogundade of the state’s Ministry of Justice had presented a medical report, the statement of the accused, report of the panels set up by the state Teaching Service Commission and the statement of the victim before the court.

While speaking on the case, Justice Abodunde said:

“Cases of child defilement have been on the increase lately and to serve as a deterrent to others, my view is that the punishment stipulated by the law was deliberate to deter the offence and protect the rights of the child.

The defense counsel is pleading for leniency and praying for a fine instead of the due punishment. My question is, who pays the victim for the lifetime scar of the trauma and torture of rape?

I am unable to deviate from the provisions of the law in this instance. The defendant is found guilty as charged and sentenced to life imprisonment.”

The court found Ajayi guilty of raping a minor contrary to Section 31(2) of the Child Rights Law of Ekiti State, 2012, and duly sentenced him to life in jail.
